With a collection of top international athletes, local business leaders and long-time personal supporters,
World Champion Sarah Hammer headlined the 1st annual Celebration of Excellence at the ADT Event Center Velodrome
in Carson, California on August 12th. Malaysian World Cup Champion Josiah Ng, Canadian Commonwealth Silver Medalist
Travis Smith, 2004 United States Olympian Adam Duvendeck and two-time American Junior National Champion Spencer
Hartfeld provided some world class exhibition racing which set the stage to showcase local female junior talent
as they competed in the 500 meter time trial and other events. The day’s event concluded with a World Record
attempt by Sarah’s long-time supporter and newly announced team sponsor, Dr. Brent Kay of the OUCH Sports Medical
Center.
Sarah used the American Women’s Track Cycling Fund fundraiser to thank her supporters from last year who were
all an integral part of her World Championship success and to also unveil some of her new sponsors for the
upcoming season. Sarah and other speakers also took advantage of the occasion to outline the AWTCF’s mission and
emphasize the on-going battle to keep women in the sport of track cycling. Hammer stated, “I don’t think this
event could have gone any better! We had the VP of the Home Depot Center in attendance and other top business
leaders; it was a great stage to show our new vision for women’s track cycling.”
